When you are patient, you have learned that you can make it through the turmoil and chaos of your life situations. This can have enormous impact on your goal of self-esteem and holistic health.
If you’re confident that you will not only get through and survive a provocation or misfortune, but that you will actually receive a worthwhile lesson from it, then you can imagine how your self-confidence in your ability to handle whatever comes at you can be increased.
People who are spiritually enlightened and maintain a strong sense of self-esteem are often seen by others as happy and at peace.
What others don’t see are the moments, days, weeks, and years of continuous learning, struggle, and practice that is involved in each person’s journey.
Indeed, many people often assume that spiritual struggles for the ‘enlightened’ are a matter of the past and that coping with life has become easy for them.
Although continual practice of techniques that move our spiritual goals forward will often improve our insights and awaken self-esteem, each journey requires a strong and continued sense of patience with ourselves and others.
Patience is an important spiritual goal because it provides a way to help us abide the provocations, major misfortunes, and minor annoyances that are part of life.
When we increase our patience, we increase our tolerance of adversity without complaint and reduce the urge toward restlessness and anxiety when confronted with a delay in getting what we want.
One effective way to increase patience is by working with the body first. Tools that focus on changing the sensations in your body to create a calming and relaxed state can set the stage for your mind to accept that good things take time.
If you are able to calm your body and relieve tension, you experience less urgency to do something quickly to get relief.
We explore these tools in my experiential workshops and participants report huge relief of tension and a greater sense of peace.
